THE LIVING SPACE OF THE APARTMENT CAT
It is often said that a cat is unhappy in an apartment … it may be true if we neglect him and do nothing for his well-being, but there are lots of tips to intelligently occupy his days and make him a fully happy cat!
EASY MEASURES TO TAKE PLACE
Food and litter should not be placed too close to each other. This could upset the cat’s balance. This is therefore one of the first rules to apply as a priority.
To organize things in order to respect this principle AND in addition to occupy his cat who does not go out except on the balcony, we organize his apartment according to his needs! Yes, we almost live with our cat, but a happy cat = a happy owner!
The litter should be away from its food (kitchen) areas. The litter box should be in a quiet place, where the cat can relieve himself in peace. He will not be disturbed by family members, nor by noises like the washing machine, for example.
OCCUPY YOUR CAT EFFECTIVELY
To keep him occupied and allow him to “hunt” you can place his food and water bowls in the apartment. It keeps him busy more efficiently than if he had everything in one place!
Likewise, it is possible to distribute cat toys (or homemade cat toys!) All over the apartment. This will allow him to take short breaks from playing when he falls on it. A catnip toy is usually a must have. You can also hang a fishing rod so it can play on its own. This is useful when you are not there or not available.
Scrapers can also allow him to let off steam (and wear down his claws). There are different shapes, classic scratching posts or scratching mats. One of each can be ideal, of course, spread across its field. Cat trees will also allow him to use his climbing skills. He will also get a little exercise and have “his own” places to observe the life of the house in peace.
And for cats who tend to get really bored to the point of depression, the Pipolino food dispenser toy is the perfect accessory! The cat will spend some time during the day accessing its food. He is busy and therefore less bored. At the same time, he relieves himself.
APARTMENT LIFE: SUSPICION OF DEPRESS
Despite all this does your cat seem depressed? Talk to your vet right away. Maybe consider giving her a cat companion. Some cats who have been used to living in a community calm down more easily with a playmate! Contact shelters and associations for the protection of cats to make happy a cat who has not had a good start in life.
